Introduction to Voices

Voices is intended to be a collection of poems written and illustrated
by Mike Burr .
make up
she applicates her makeup
with a brick, a stick, a compass
she, a black arched eye
reflect the sky
as the backdrop to some juvenile rumpus
her wilful children from the ceiling scream
or dead upon the lounge are seen
she see them ponders : her womb the odd vinculus
oh sigh, what from the fridge was once forbade
as maidens those of Bacchus made
she tipples, her escapee, hand maiden of the vinous
and hears a song upon the telly sung
redolent of she when young
of troubadours and matadors and bulls and deeds so heinous
when all she wanted then was brood
and to chant the plastic symphonies of motherhood
a song sung so contagious
whose realities outrageous
are held upon a glass and drunk
much quicker than the woman thunk
for makeup and motherhood : the wise will hold courageous
